Clopidogrel – What It Is Used For

What Is Clopidogrel?

Clopidogrel is an antiplatelet medicine. It helps prevent platelets (a type of blood cell) from sticking together and forming harmful blood clots in the arteries.

Common Medical Uses (Indications)

Doctors commonly use clopidogrel to reduce the risk of heart and blood vessel problems caused by clots. Typical indications include:

  • After a heart attack (myocardial infarction): To lower the risk of another heart attack, stroke, or death due to heart disease.
  • After an ischemic stroke or TIA (mini-stroke): To reduce the chance of another stroke or TIA.
  • Peripheral arterial disease (PAD): In people with narrowed arteries in the legs or other areas, to reduce clot-related complications.
  • Acute coronary syndrome (ACS): Such as unstable angina or certain types of heart attack, often used together with aspirin (dual antiplatelet therapy) as advised by a cardiologist.
  • After stent placement (angioplasty/PCI): To help keep the stent open and reduce the risk of clot formation inside the stent, usually together with aspirin for a period decided by the cardiologist.

Important Cautions (General Information)

  • Clopidogrel increases the risk of bleeding (e.g., easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, black or bloody stools).
  • People with active bleeding (like active stomach ulcer or brain bleed) or known allergy to clopidogrel generally should not use it unless a specialist decides otherwise.
  • Doctors also consider other conditions (like severe liver disease, other blood-thinning medicines, upcoming surgery, etc.) before starting or continuing clopidogrel.
  • Never start, stop, or change clopidogrel on your own, especially if you have a heart stent or heart/brain vessel disease—this must be done only under a doctor’s supervision.
